Just next door to bustling Portsmouth, Kittery, Maine is a wonderful place to call home. Home to multiple historic parks and walking trails, Kittery has a variety of neighborhoods. You can choose to be on the water, close to shops and restaurants and/or on a few acres with privacy. Home prices vary due to the diversity of neighborhood options.
Why Moms Love It
Close to downtown Portsmouth and home to its own quaint downtown area, The Foreside, Kittery offers families a small town feel with the amenities of larger, eventful Portsmouth at their fingertips. It is a very grass roots town with people coming together for fun events like the Kittery Block Party (see below for more details)!

Playgrounds, Parks & Attractions
There’s so much to do in Kittery, especially if you love the outdoors. Fort Foster, an historic fort active from 1901-1946, in Kittery Point has beaches, a playground, picnic tables and more. Plus, Kittery Town Forest is 71 acres with walking trails — making it ideal for a family hike. Rogers Park is a small park with walking trails along Spruce Creek. All 3 of these parks are dog friendly so the whole family is welcome!
In terms of beaches. Seapoint Beach is a favorite among locals thanks to a resident-parking-only rule. During peak summer hours, this is the place to be to avoid crowds.
One of the best events of the year is the Kittery Block Party that happens during the height of summer. Live music, a 5k and a festival of food, artisans and more make this a must-attend event!
Childcare & Schools
There are a few preschools close to Kittery, including The Seacoast Waldorf School in nearby Eliot. There are also several childcare options in the area including a Nature-Based childcare center!
When it comes to schools, students attend Horace Mitchell Primary School from K-3 then move onto Shapleigh School from grades 4-8. The high school is R.W. Traip and, since there are no other districts that feed into Kittery, these students really develop a camaraderie throughout their school years.
Shops & Restaurants
The hub of Kittery is undoubtedly Kittery Foreside. It’s a quaint center with loads of restaurants and shops. Take a stroll and enjoy!
Kittery is a turning into quite the culinary destination. Some favorite places to dine include:

In addition to fabulous restaurants, if you are looking to buy organic and local produce, Golden Harvest is the place to go. Plus, you can grab your protein at Carls Meat Market and homemade pasta across the street at Terra Cotta. And you can’t miss the local butcher, Maine MEat: it’s the place to go to grab all your locally sourced proteins.
In terms of shopping, Kittery has a lot going on. The Kittery Outlets are home to the popular Kittery Trading Post and popular outlet stores including J Crew, Lululemon, Crate & Barrel and Hanna Andersson.
