There’s a new preschool in town and we can’t wait to tell you about it! The Treehouse School of Portsmouth lies in the downtown area, just a stone’s throw away from Prescott Park.
Years of Experience in Education
Kristin Fichera, The Treehouse School of Portsmouth’s founder, owner and head teacher, brings years of experience in elementary and preschool education to the table. At 34, Kristin has taught preschool, kindergarten, first and second grades in New York City, Boston and Hamilton, MA. She has her Masters of Education from Lesley University. Because she knows what helps kids flourish in an early elementary school classroom, Kristin brings a unique perspective to the field of early childhood education. Her passion for schooling in an urban setting will also shine in this downtown Portsmouth gem.
The Schedule
There are two classes in the school, sorted by age. Each class has one head teacher and at least one floater. Enrollment begins at 2.9 years like at other preschools in Portsmouth and children must be potty trained.
The Treehouse School offers an expansive and flexible schedule that fulfills the variety of needs parents have. It will follow the local school schedule, also like other preschools in Portsmouth. In addition, the Treehouse School will offer 6 weeks of summer camp for kiddos who need some summer structure and care.
There are also plenty of options for extended care both at the beginning and the end of the day, which is so nice for working parents and caretakers.
Philosophy
Because of Kristin’s background in elementary education, she has a good handle on what skills children need for kindergarten. She knows that children need to learn how to behave in a classroom, share, resolve conflicts and so much more. Yet she also knows they need a lot of time to play and just be kids. The Treehouse School’s hybrid philosophy allows for an emphasis on social curricula, exploration, independence and school readiness. Becoming Part of a Living, Breathing Community
When a city has schools in its downtown center, that’s how a living, breathing community is further established. We are so excited to a be a part of this place!
When we spoke with Kristin it was clear her passion for teaching young children directly ties to the environment in which she works. Having taught in preschools in New York City and Boston, Kristin aims to create an urban experience for every kid enrolled. From field trips to Strawbery Banke to lunch at Prescott Park, The Treehouse School of Portsmouth will be the first of its kind in the area. With the help of experienced teachers, students will participate in their community and get outside every day to explore their town.
