When my family is in a Seacoast slump, we drive an hour north to explore all this town has to offer. From scenic lighthouses and sandy beaches to capitating museums and delectable food, there are plenty of fun things to do with kids in Portland, Maine. Here are just a few of my family’s favorites!
Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine
250 Thompsons Point Rd, Portland, ME 04102
My family has always been a fan of the Children’s Museum of Maine, and in 2021, it changed locations and reopened after a $14 million renovation. It is an awesome daytrip for babies through elementary age kids. This museum has three floors of hands on exhibits that spark imagination and excitement. In addition, the professional theater offers regular productions. I suggest you reserve tickets to ensure you get entry. The museum is open six days (closed Tuesday) from 9 am to 4 pm with general admission being $16.
Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad
49 Thames St, Portland, ME 04101
Another fun thing to do with kids in Portland, Maine is to take a train ride! The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad takes hourly rides from 10 am to 5 pm with tickets ranging from $9 to $20 depending on class and age. Train-loving littles will love the 40 minute ride and older kids and parents will appreciate the narration as you pass lighthouses, marinas, and forts. Check out details on their website before you go.
Eastern Promenade
Eastern Promenade, Portland, ME 04101
Have a nice weather day in Portland? Head down to the city park called the Eastern Promenade, or Eastern Prom for short. This 2 mile section of trail and park is Portland’s nicest harborside stroll. It is dog-friendly and stroller-friendly. Enjoy views of the harbor, boats, and islands along the greenway. There’s a playground and its a nice walk for littles. Check out the trail map here to navigate the prom and get the most out of your visit. If you want to continue your walk, it connects to the Back Cove Trail which continues for another 3 miles. This park is accessible by street parking.
Ferry to Peaks Island
Maine State Pier, Portland, ME 04101
Kids love boats rides and the taking the passenger ferry to Peaks Island is one of the best fun things to do with kids in Portland, Maine. For $7.70 ($3.85 for child) round trip, you can hop aboard Casco Bay Passenger Ferry in Portland and take the 30 minute ride out to Peaks. In the summer, the ferry runs about every hour (see schedule here). Once on Peaks, walk to the beach, rent a bike (or bring your own) and tour the island, or simply grab ice cream and head on back! This is a great way to feel you’ve really got away while staying close to home. Fee parking is available at the lot at the Maine State Pier. Get there plenty early to find parking and purchase tickets.
Deering Oaks Playground
Forest Ave and Park Ave, Portland, ME 04101
Deering Oaks is a large, 55 acre, city park that’s a fun (and free) destination in Portland. In the summer, it has an awesome splash pad (although there are some great splash pads on the Seacoast as well). The park boasts a fantastic playground – with zip lines even the parents will enjoy! Bring a scooter or bike and scoot around the park while enjoying city views and the large pond and fountain.
